Almost two years ago jonas munk (manual, limp, icebreaker international) and jakob skøtt (syntaks, limp) began recording for this gorgeous album, their most ambitious work to date. “Golden Sun” can loosely be described as the first tentative steps of two inspired artists into the realms of instrumental hip hop, though not quite as you’d imagine. The sounds here are as far removed from the hiccup beats of Scott Herren or the syncopated plunderphonics of Daedelus as you could imagine – instead focusing on a densely layered fabric of atmospheric synths and padded percussion. Hard to imagine what shoegazing hip hop might sound like, but “Golden Sun” manages it without pretension or dogmatism, delivering a warm haze of deeply cinematic bliss that sounds like Slowdive or My Bloody Valentine with b-boy beats. Lovely material - highly recommended.
